ps. don't want to have to drive all over so one good area would do! also have had visions of myself surfing in something other than a wetsuit with hood any chance it'l be warm enough?

So Paula, you're looking for a place with a variety of spots so you don't have to drive, with warm water and no crowds? If I knew about such a place I probably wouldn't tell you where it was : )
Seriously your best bet would be either Peniche or Sagres as both places have lots of different waves that work in different conditions. There will be a lot of people in both places though, but I'm afraid between now and October everywhere will be busy. Maybe you should consider a surf camp? And I'm sorry to say you will need a wetsuit (3/2) but you can at least leave your hood at home!

I personally am excited by the beaches of the Algarve (in spite of living in Lisbon) Carrapateira, Amado, all relatively close, and very nice! In this zone with a suit 3.2, you are very well.
The beaches of Lisbon, they are quite good, but not with so many nature as those of the Algarve, here you can remain in Praia Grande, praia das maçãs or ericeira, são julião. If you want more information, send to me a mail, which helped you with great pleasure

You want to surf with no crowds, beaches close to each other? The north coast, around Porto´s area is the best option. The only place that you can surf in peace, really. Also great are the public transportation to the beach and Porto´s downtown.
Hope it helps
