Surfing for kids round Lisbon/Sintra/Cascais

« on: July 15 2007 18:07:00 »

We have a bunch of kids aged 9-12 who want to learn to surf somewhere in the Lisbon/Sintra area in early August.

I was thinking of taking them to Peniche as the conditions seem great there. But 2 hours driving each way to get there is a bit much, so maybe somewhere around Lisbon/Cascais/Sintra would be much more convenient.

The problem is that the beaches between Lisbon and Cascais seems very crowded, while the sea conditions in locations like Praia Grande, Ericeira, etc seem a bit too strong for young kids...

Anyone got any recommendations? Recommendations on surf schools would also be great!

Hi Floyd, you are right there, Lisbon coast is almost flat at the moment and the other spots have strong currents and some big waves, forget Ericeira as its reef break. All the others you mentioned are sand so, much easier for kids. Guincho, Praia Grande, Pequena and Macas have great waves and there is always an area with less currents and where you can take them just on the inside without any danger. If you get a small clean swell you can even go on the outside so, nothing to worry about, there is always a spot for you. Let me know if you need any more info, have fun!
