Yeah you are right, Sintra is around 30 minutes from Ericeira but there are many places to stay if you look around. As for boards, there are many schools over there that rent boards so it should not be a problem, Have fun

a good place to stay in Ericeira is Hospedaria Bernado if it's still open, just opposite the post office (tel. 261862378). Not as cheap as a hostel but not expensive. Otherwise there's the campsite just over the road from Reef which is closer to the surf than anywhere else. Sintra is the most popular tourist spot outside the Algarve so you'll definitely need to book well ahead if you stay there. Better as a flat day option though. Drop me a line if you need any more info.

If you wanna surf in Ericeira, stay in Ericeira.
I stayed with my ex girlfriend there for 25Euros a night, smackdab in the middle of the village.
Stay local and eat breakfast at the various bakeries in town.
Sintra is a dump, i was extremely disappointed when i visited it. It has a massive oil storage facility + harbour for big tankers (so you can guess how the local water quality will be).
Cheers and happy surfing.

I think you've confused Sintra with Sines. Sintra isn't on the coast and it's certainly not a dump!
