moving to lisbon, questions!« on: February 26 2008 10:02:00 »
hey im moving to lisbon this august on my semester exchange abroad at university, i will be staying till january. I have surfed a little before on friends boards and such so im a beginner. I was wondering how cheap i would be able to get an old used car for?, it just needs to get me to the beach and back. I was also wondering what wetsuit(s) are best for the colder months october-january? thanks for any help!

Had to help a fellow Toby - you'll probably be fine in a 3/2 year round in Lisbon although it's possible that a 4/3 might be better so you're covered for the few cold winter days. There isn't much of a second hand car market in Portugal but you should be able to pick something up, Best bet is to make some friends who surf and can show you the ropes. Will be moving back to Portugal myself in September but not to Lisbon. Come up to Figueira some time!

Tobees, Lesbos is a private isle southeast of Greece that rarely gets surf, so why is it on this site? Wrong AAA map? Also, water is warm and no wetsuit needed, but urchins exist where not extirpated by killer algae.

LIsbon is great and easy to get around but to avoid crowds, you do need a car. Head to places like Guincho, Praia Grande, Macas etc, all depending on your levels of course. To start with, if you do not have a car, you can get the train to Carcavelos and Sao Pedro ( in the winter months as the summer is flat there ) Let me know if you need help as I live here. Take care, good luck and enjoy the waves.

Hi Toby, i live in Ericeira, the surf capital in Portugal, half an hour from lisbon.
You can get a car easely with 400 / 500 € or less
And to surf you have many beaches around Lisbon, ericeira off course, in Sintra, Guincho, the coast of estoril, in south you have costa da caparica, easy waves but whit some crowd and sometimes also dangerous about robberies, i can give you some tips about it.
I also have a litlle house to rent near ericeira, if you know someone who wants to came to surf, share whit them my e-mail.
If you need more info contact-me ok !
