Did exactly what you are doing 4 years ago and been back since a few times. Anyway, arrived Faro and headed straight west (there is very little on the South of anything consistent to be worth hanging around for). First stop is Sagres. Great breaks close by and up the coast a variety awaits you all within 10-30 mins drive. There is little life along the West Coast South of Lisbon so stay based in Sagres. In fact we ended up staying there 6 weeks. The mood in the town is great, the locals take you in. Boards (and other gear) expensive out there. Buy before you travel.
Be warned, it can be chilly in the evening, and the wind always blows (great for windsurfing round there - beach called Martinhal rocks for flat water blasting).
Go sagres, can't encourage you enough.

I am leaving tomorrow to Lisbon.
I'll be in Portugal surfing till the 26th of august, maybe I'll meet some friends in the Algarve (two of them are really good surfers) and stay a bit there.
I don't think I will check my e-mail so often, so I leave you my mobile number : +39 335 6101528.
see you there maybe

Hi. First of all, forget Faro, unless you're lucky enough to arrive on a day of "levante" (south swell). Move along to the west cost where the views and the surf are epic.
It will be difficult to find a 7'0 board in Portugal, we don't use them much, and you can count on about 150€. You can try to go to a surf school who can be selling there material.
In September, during the weekends I'll be surfing, swell willing, so let me know where you are, that is if you wish.

Ello, I'll be flying to faro early next week (23rd) for 2 weeks of roadtrippin, camping, whateva, keen to catch some surf. no accommodation plans as yet, not sure how safe I'll be on my own in a tent. Would be sweet to meet you if you're about. What transport are u taking? Also, I don't have a board, will it be cheap to rent or better off buying?
