Surfing near Lisbon end of May« on: April 29 2009 04:04:00 »
This will be my first time surfing in Portugal. I surf a longboard in the U.K. but am by no means an expert and could do with some pretty easy waves.
I'm flying into Lisbon & was then planning to take the train to Estoril & hire a board there but have heard pollution is quite bad which has put me off. Another option I looked at is hiring a car and driving up to Ericeira which sounds nice.
Any advice on a good location for a novice with hire boards available and also a few decent places for a drink in the evening.
Thanks for your time

No problem about pollution in Estoril, but the crowd ...and the train ... bad option !!!
I live in Ericeira, the surf capital in Portugal, and i think its a best option to stay here.
See if you like my house near Ericeira at www.casadaadega.blogs.sapo.pt
In the Village you have also many options for stay, cheap hotels, rooms, nice hotels, camping, bungalows, etc..., and also to rent a board you have plenty of surf-shops and schools.
I have a friend who have a surf-shop, if you need i can see with him about the rental.

You could do both - it's definitely worth hiring a car so you can go where it's going to be good. The Lisbon breaks get super crowded but on the other side of the Tejo (Costa etc) it's not so bad. The problem with Ericeira is that the waves might be too good, unless you're the kind of longboarder who enjoys shallow reefs!

There is fine sandy beaches at Ericeira also, with very good waves, not only reef breaks.

Portugal is very nice place where to do surfing, and I can advise you to go to Peniche. There is more than 20 surf spots around Peniche with different wave breaks and it works every day, the most popular surfing beach in Portugal is Supertubos, and as the most usually wind direction is norths-west, it works perfect with offshore wind.
