Car Hire in Lisbon« on: June 05 2009 05:06:00 »
A friend and I are planning a trip to big P at the end of July for a couple of weeks. Planning to head up towards Ericeira and Peniche but want to be mobile as we both have different levels of experience. Car hire looks pricey and not sure if my friend's 7"6 is gonna fit into a compact. Any ideas? Second hand bangers? Cheapest car rental place in Lisbon?
Thanks for your help guys

I have just returned from Lisbon, Portugal and hired a car through Carjet.com who are very reasonable. Another company I regularily use is carhire3000.co.uk.
Unfortunately last Tuesday my bag was stolen from the locked hire car which had a Budget insurance disc on the windscreen so I was an obvious target.
My advice when making enquiries is to ask if there are any markings on the hire cars etc, I had everything taken including my passport in the space of 5 to 7 minutes during a loo stop! Do please take all your valuables with you and learn from my mistake.
Happy holidays and maybe will meet in Foz du Arelho (another great beach) as we will be heading back at end of July.

Blimming heck, poor you! That sounds terrible. Thanks so much for the info and for the heads up! I think we have decided on Peniche for the duration having spoken to some other friends who have been.....difficult to get a feel for the scale of a place if you've never been so gonna book a motor just to be on the safe side. Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip

Dan, about "the scale of the place" it's under an hour from Ericeira to Peniche so it's dead easy to be staying at one and surfing at the other. Praia Azul, which is about half way between the two, is one of my favourite waves in Portugal when it's working and often has a wave when everywhere else is flat. A car is definitely a good idea. Have a great trip.
