try looking for Torreira on google map..
it´s about 40km south of Porto. Small and very relaxed sea/riverside village with miles of uncrowded beachbreaks and a Sand Dunes Natural Reserve..
You can also find a litle surfschool there (google search for Pontoeste), great food and plenty of outdoor activitys..
if you need any more info about that area drop me a mail.

It depends what you're after but if you're looking to maximise your water time and avoid the crowds I can strongly recommend the coast south of Porto around Aveiro. It's a beautiful area. I live further south near Figueira but lately I've been surfing lots up there. If you need any more information just drop me a line - I've been living here for a long time and should be able to help.

Sorry for dropping in the conversation, but i would like to visit with my wife and kid partugal and find a nice place to stay with our camper near some surfspots. Longer stay in mind, so not necessaraly camp sites.

Nice drop in! ok, I'm located (lol) at Azurara. Allways wellcome guests... See you! by thw way, Azurara is told to be one of the begginers spots (North Oporto - Vila do Conde).

I would recommend you the northest part of Portugal. Around Afife, Vila Praia de Âncora and Moledo.
Very quiet place only in August it's has some more people coming from Porto. You have several km's of beaches with few people.
Cheaper accomodation and almost all bars and restaurants are also cheap. A perfect spot for familys certainly!
But as others said, near Aveiro it's almost the same. But i prefer the northern part, up from Viana do Castelo.
