Peniche or Ericiera« on: July 30 2011 13:07:00 »
Wonder where it is best to go for a few days of surfing; Peniche or Ericiera? Without renting a car, just flying into Lissabon, using public transportation and staying close to the beach. Consistency of medium sized waves for intermediate surfer. Planing to go in October. Company welcome.

I was in Portugal last month with the same scenario. I chose Ericiera because it is closer to Lisbon. Town was mellow with several good surf shops and plenty of good breaks in the intermediate range. Mix of rocky reefs and sandy beaches in between. Water about 65. Lots of urchins at some places. Good luck, Will

Will....how did you get to the surfspots, anything in walking distance, rent-a-bike, or shuttles?

Ericeira is closser to Lisbon...and you will find waves for all levels. For budget surftrip you can rent a bike and stay in Ericeira official Camping(just in front of the waves). But my sugestion is that you should rent a Budget Campervan...as it is all in one (Transportation and place to stay). check "west coast campers"...they also rent surfboards and wetsuits. Cheers Paulo

Peniche is considered the most consistent and diverse surfing area in Europe. Surf spots from the soft mellow up to the powerful and hollow Supertubos host of the WCT stop in Peniche. Both sand and reef setups, point breaks, but also different wind and swell exposures that make the consistentcy.
There are several surf camps based in the area you’ll find some pubs and clubs where to party and have fun. Great fish and seafood restaurants (Peniche is Portugal’s second largest fishing harbour), beaches are execellent and nearby you can find some great day trips to historical Miedeval Óbidos.
We are Baleal Surf Camp and your'e welcome to look us up on the web, indeoendent reviews are available on Tripadvisor.co.uk for example.
Good luck, Peniche or Ericeira just enjoy your surfing...

Peniche definitly! It's not that far from Lisbon (1 hour by car), we have good highways to get there, but most of all it's the best surfing spot in Europe. You'll find all diferente kind of waves in a range of 15 kms. Also you have a lot of surf camps with excellent conditions, good prices and friendly people, Surfshops, and restaurants. If you are comming to Portugal, even if you choose another spot, please take a day to surf in Peniche area. You won't be sorry! Have a nice trip!!

I'm a beginner to intermediate. I'll be in Peniche soon. When staying in Peniche-City (Geekco Hostel) would you recommend renting a car to get around? Or is everything within walking distance/public transportation? For example when going to the beach via a surf shop to rent a board, how long will that take?
Do I have to rent a car in Lisboa or can I get one in Peniche, too?
Thanks for your help!
