How much rubber will I need in Oban?

« on: April 28 2005 19:04:00 »

I'm moving from the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia to Oban, Scotland. The thickest wettie I can get here is a 4/3. Will it do the job in the north of Scotland or should I wait till I get there to buy some serious rubber.  While I'm at it where are the closest breaks to Oban?

Thanks for the pointers fellas. That's the first time I have heard that someone has actually been too warm in Scottish water! The next question is wear do I get the rubber from (Scotastic, keep your mind out of the gutter).  We haven't even head of wearing a 5/3 where I come from. I assume that there are no surf shops in the North West? Should I swing by Endinburgh on the way?

Oban is very close to The Isle of Tiree where they have the windsurfing champs each year. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to grab one near there. If not call Boardwise and ask for a guy called Jnr  0131 221 1088 Awesome surfer, and he'll be able to hook you up with a suit!
Also If I were you I'd head up to Thurso, world class waves up there....fecking cold tho( ur not in auz anymore )

G'day Symon...

I moved from Gorokan, Central Coast NSW to just outside Edinburgh, Scotland.... So we have something in common...

I brought my surfboard with me but trashed all my old wetsuit and old gear and recently bought a new 5/3 wetsuit and am yet to try it out....

A 4/3 should be OK, but you may need a hood and boots...

Any good surf locations up there...?
Cheers Bruce
