Waves near Honiara??? Surfing Solomon Islands

Thinking of taking up a job in Honiara. Anyone out there know if there are any waves near city? How far to nearest wave?

Nearest waves are at Maravagi in Gela (2 hour outboard motor trip - book weekend trips with the nice locally owned resort there) or on South Guadalcanal in some little known and very hard to get to spots.  Some swell gets up to the Sols from the South - eg Gizo and south Guadalcanal which in theory is not far. But no roads, treachorous seas in an outboard motor, the need for local knowledge of where the breaks are and what conditions or you could spend a lot of money and time and get no surf and a lot of hassles...  Surf Solomons is starting weekend group trips to these spots in November and thats really the only way to do it.  Ask at Rain Tree Cafe for more information about surfing trips when you are in Honiara if you take the job.

Maravagi is the closest to Honiara but jump on a plane and go to Malaita, Ysabel or Gizo and you will score. Solomons has the best surf on the planet. Malaita, Ysabel get up to about 8 ft perfect barrels during November to April. Check out surfthesolomons website for trips as well as surftheearth. Gizo rips during winter but can be more fickle - when we surfed there with Benji Weatherley, Brett Dorrington and Shaun Harrington it was a solid four foot. O'Neill's Rob Bain and his son have just come back from surfing Malaita and scored big time. There are no crowds - great waves and great people.

the answer to that question is no..no waves near honiara..you have to travel very far to get a good wave.

I think i have to rebut my statement..there is. You can go to the west of honiara to a place called Kakabona...ask the locals around there. Or you can go further down to west guadalcanal at Visale. To find the waves...ask locals they will help you.
