Surfing Durban in August

« on: July 28 2006 16:07:00 »

I'm going to be staying on the beach (literally) in Ballito Bay, Durban and was wondering what the surf is like in August. I understand that there's a good swell around this time of the year due to the storms between Madagascar and Mozambique, and the water is quite warm (I'm from Ireland, so anything above 10C is warm!). But my main concern is this: How big are the waves? I'm an intermediate level surfer at best and am still recovering from a long illness and surgery, so my fitness level is way below par. So, are the waves big (how big?)? Is the surf heavy? Is the surf there better suited to longboards or short?

Another question I have is this: How much should I expect to pay for a shortboard? I plan on bringing my quiver (a chunky 6'8", a beautifull light 7'3" and a very fun 8'0"), but I want a new shortboard.

Cheers!
Kevin.
