Honest Advice Needed

« on: January 21 2007 16:01:00 »

Hi guys my partner & I are heading to S.A.  in June/July 08.  As the surf is too heavy for me most of my time spent there will be filming him.  My 1st q's is where is the best/safest place to fly to so we can get to J-Bay? How safe is it over there?  I've heard alot of people say you never leave your girl alone?  Basically any advice for a couple travelling to J-Bay would be much appreciated.  Be honest/be brutually honest.  This is a major dream come true for as to surf there but we do not want to go in blind to the dangers.....

I've lived in SA most of my life and it's a great place although you need to be aware of the crime. To get to Jbay you need to fly into SA via JHB or Cape Town and then fly to Port Elizabeth. You'll then need to drive south to JBay (roughly 2 hours drive)

Thanks for your info.  Do you know if there is a website about travelling/accomodation for between Port Eliz. & J-Bay.  Do you recommend driving, bus or rail for that 2 hour journey?  With J-Bay being a bit of a surfers town how safe am I going to be left alone on the beach while my partner surfs?  Is it just a case of watching my or something that you just wouldnt do???

Yes, there's crime in SA, but I've spent all my life here and the worst thing thats happened to me is they keep stealing my damn car radio! Just lock your doors, stay away from dodgey places and you'll be fine. It really isn't that bad! Should get some sick waves too!

How are ya mate,
As you'll be coming straight to J-bay i wouldn't worry too much about the crime in SA but saying that, always be aware of your belongings.
My advice is to get hold of Teegan at Beach Music - Awesome place overlooking Supers. It's friendly, safe and good value for money.
Check out:www.beachmusic.co.za for all details.
They'll also organise for you to get collected from the PE airport.
Good luck and enjoy Africa

Hi Jansie, I am a local surfer from JBay and own a guesthouse overlooking Suirfers Point and Tubes. Crime is a problem in the major cities but is virtually non-existant in Jbay. U need to keep an eye on your stuff like you would in any place, but there is nothing weird ot different here. Do not display jewelry or cameras when walking on isolated beaches, there has been incidants of snatching from vagrants in the area.Otherwise a very peacefull little town with everything u would need to enjoy the stay. If u should need advice on the area, give me an e-mailon my guesthouse website, aloha@southernconfortjbay.co.za
regards
andre

The drive from PE airport to J_Bay is only 45- 50 minutes.
