I'm a kiwi. Am planning on basing myself in Northern Spain to surf in and around Mundaka and possibly up as far as Biarritz. My eta is late June.
I'm off to Bali for 3 weeks end April-hopefully by the end of that, I'll be intermediate level! Have heard that Hossegors is cool (a mini NZ if that doesn't put you off) and best time to be there is Aug/Sep.
Cheers from Auckland

How ya Steve.
Best time of year is sept oct but we were there for ten days last august and surfed everyday. We were based in san sebastian which is a big town/small city but is great, good nitelife etc. It has a surf beach in the city which is good but very busy with surfers and people just swimming. If you drive out of the city, east or west along coast you'll find less crowded spots. Hossegor is only 45 min away tops and is awesome. Pukas surf shop on main beach in san sebastian do surfboard hire, not the cheapest but good quality gear for rent.

I am about to make a crazy trip to San Sebastian from Barcelona tonight just for the heck of it. I surf but I don't plan to do so on this trip coz I am sick, but def... either may, july or october I will be back. Will wait for future updates re renting boards, etc.
I have a 7'2 fishtail in Los Angeles - surfed it all through CA, Hawaii and the Pipeline (when the waves were not too scary!) - can I use it in Mundaka? OR better rent? Not really sure...
I was in Bali last July - nice waves...in Kuta and Dreamland (I don't know the real name) Really long breaks! And it's warm I love it!
Wish me luck this weekend in San Sebastian - Bilbao, I don't know where else to go... I just want to get away! hahaha
