Arugam Bay after the Tsunami?

Hi Everybody!

I´d like to travell to Arugam Bay in August. I know that the surf is as good as ever but I am worrying about the atmosphere in the town after the Tsunami. I am sure a lot of houses are getting rebuilt right now - so maybe it´s not a good place right now to have a relaxed hangout...!?! Has anybody of you guys been there lately?

Cheers, Marco

RE: Arugam Bay after the Tsunami?

My partner and 10 year old son went to Sri Lanka for xmas and new year and spent 5 glorious weeks there,  I wanted to travel to Arugum bay but having spoken to the wonderful singhalese people, they informed me that the whole beach had been swept away.  What with all the tamil trouble etc if I were you I would spend my time on the south coast, Hikkaduwa is great for surfing and has a surf shop, Unawatuna has some surf on the north side of the bay, you literally have to throw yourself on to the waves from some jagged rocks - good fun!  also Mirrissa has a small but friendly surf community, although its very quite there, if your looking for somewhere to hang out I would recommend Hikkaduwa, its has loads of bars and shops etc and you can hire boards there too.
