I'm heading there around the same time. Last time I went in December and December is good down in the South. The South West Monsoon kicks in during May making the South no good and I think that's the time the East around Arugam Bay becomes the place to go. I think that May is kind of on the shoulder though.
I'm planning to head to Arugam Bay at this point. Let me know if you're heading there.

hey mate, i've just come back from surfing in Weligama and Hikkaduwa.
i'm an almost-intermediate. i can stand on a long board fairly well. but i get wiped out almost everytime on a thruster. darn shame but that's wher i'm at ha ha.
anyway back to your question. Weligama is a great place to learn adn progress. it's completely safe, lovely, and there's some night life not far in mirissa. (300 rupie for a 10 munites tuktuk ride)
hikkaduwa has more serious waves, but much better nightlife.
your biggest problem is that it's coming towards the end of the season for that side of the island.
anyway, i hope this answers some of your questions..What board do you ride?

ya, sounds like i'll be heading to aragum as well. i'm in india right now and might be heading to nepal before i go to sri lanka. either way, i think i should arrive late april/early may and will be in sri lanka until may 16th.
hopefully there'll be boards for hire or i'm going to be body surfing. lol. when i lived in australia i was riding 6'8 hybrid after a couple months of using a mini-mal.

Hi! I'm a surfer ( Local ) from Hikkaduwa ( southern surf area). If you are lucky enough you get some waves in south coast. But most surely in East Coast ( Arugambay). If you want to know further info please email me above address.

I have a similar question :). I wanna go to Sri Lanka for surfing in a few days, but I only have 5 or 6 days and as from what i read so far it takes a day to get to Arugambay. Or is it possible to fly there?
Anyways, if it takes so long it is not worth it for me (since i only have 5 days), so question is if there is maybe somewhere closer I can go, I just a beginner and I will need lessons anyways...
Please give me some advice.
