Surfing Sri Lanka in May

Hi there, potentially going to Sri Lanka late May this year for work and would like to know the better breaks that would work this time of year. I am a goofy and ride hybrid short board of intermediate skill and more experience.

RE: Surfing Sri Lanka in May

Yes, begining season for Arugam Bay and surroundings...
10 hours drive from airport, don't go for the week end...

RE: Surfing Sri Lanka in May

I've been surfing Sri Lanka in May for the last 3 years. It's a close call between the east (Arugam Bay) where the season starts and the south (Hikkaduwa) where it ends. Depends where you're staying really, if you can spare the 10 hour car ride to the east from Colombo then defo go for it, the place is amazing, the waves friendly and the locals awesome. Stay at Beach Hut. And give them all a high five from me.

RE: Surfing Sri Lanka in May

What's the best way of getting from the airport in Colombo to the surf spots in the south (hikkaduwa/galle) and Arugam bay in the east? I am going for a month from early to early May, so I know it's the transition from one season to another. I'd like to go to both places, so does anyone know what's the best way of getting from one place to another in Sri Lanka?

RE: Surfing Sri Lanka in May

being honest the sri lanka surf is average.  Hikka is good about 2-3 times in the season and when i say good you gotta understand the distance the waves travel from way downt he bottom of SA takes all power out of the waves so you are usually gonna get slow spillers and it hardly ever barrels.  as for A bay it too is really dependant on the swell direction or it is too fast or too fat.  and so it only get good once a mth maybe and the rest is frustrating waiting.  for the money yu spend getting here, better off taking other options without a doubt. go once you won´t go back i will gaurantee ya.
