Sri Lanka - south and south east - Late Sept/ Oct or May« on: May 20 2014 04:05:00 »
Myself and my girlfriend are planning a 2 week surf trip to south and south east Sri Lanka in either late Sept/ early Oct this year or May next year. We are both beginner improvers (catch waves, stand up, basic turns etc.) We are looking for clean mellow and consistent 1-2 metre waves to improve on. We are trying to avoid crowded times i.e. August. Stormrider guides suggest May is probably the best month to go to south east in terms of swell, waves and wind conditions.
So can anyone advise which is best time to go?
Or perhaps you have a better country to surf at these times for our level?
Thanks a lot

I spent 3 months on the south coast. Most of the waves are fairly mellow although over reef. a perfect beachbreak that I taught people at is called Weiligama. It is a large bay with nice easy waves. although it did get crowded in one area near the hotels, you can walk and find your own peak. Also about 5 minutes east of the bay, in the town of Mirissa, there is a short left hand reefbreak which is mellow. Other spots to the east worth checking out are Madiha and Meddawatta. let me know if you have any other questions

Thanks for the info. I like the look of South East a lot so plan was to do South and then move on to A-Bay area afterwards. Do you think it's likely to get decent swell in both Weligama/ Mirissa and then Arugum area in May?

I personally prefer the west coast, less crowd and more spots but I'll be in Arugam bay in late sep too, where the season is from may till October.
fingers crossed for less crowds at those right hander point breaks.
May is a kind of in between between seasons , a little bit earlier march - feb and you can score some good waves anywhere at the west coast
