Travelling with my Boards

I am planning a surf trip to Huahine in April 06.  I was surprised to read on the AirTahiti (inter-island flight) website that they restrict surfboards on passenger flights. It said surfboards could go on freight flights and had to be under 1.8 meters (5.4 feet).  Are they serious?! Even if you put your boards on a freight flight trying to work out the scheduling logistics has got to be a nightmare.  Has anyone had any success travelling with their boards to the outer islands using AirTahiti? Any suggestions?
