i just got back from Kata beach a few days ago. The waves were flat around the 20th of sept. but were picking up each day. Apparently it was 1 - 2 meters a week after that.
i was there i June and it was easily 2 - 2.5 meters. Sure...you can find short boards. Check out the south side of the beach (just at the south end of beach road) you'll find a few guys renting boards of all sizes.

I was there the first week of October too. Strong, constant onshore winds, but decent-ish shape. Short period swell, warm water, head high to double overhead on the biggest waves. Lots of bathers and beginners on the inside. There's a rip that helps carry you out at the south end, so the paddle out isn't bad. I didn't like the pollution -- intermittently, there were tons of plastic in the water, from chopped up bits to large floating bags. Sometimes ther was nasty yellow foam too. My wife wants to go again, but I'm a little less enthusiatic. The big positive was that, while onshore, the waves were steady for the 7 days we were there. Looks pretty consistent to me, in that respect.

I will be in Kata Beach from October to March, which from what I have read, seems to be small to flat. Any chances for shortboarding at all??? If not, where is the closest place to score good surf???

October to March, that is the worth period of the year for surfing. Closest place will be Srilanka or Bali. (not too expensive with airasia)
If you're lucky enough, maybe some waves in october.
But u should have good time anyway, do some SUP...

Shoots bro... c'mon, there has got to be a little bump somewhere on the phuket coastline during that time period??? Where are the most consistant breaks?
