Tonga in July - Swell Consistency & Other questions« on: March 28 2005 23:03:00 »
From what I can gather this is a good time of year to visit Tonga for SW swell. I'm thinking of coming through on my way back from a world trip next year in early July.
How often does the swell break at a decent (6ft) size range around this time of year. Will I need a springsuit or can I get away with a rashy.
Anybody got any experience with scuba diving around Tongatapu?
Any tips on cheap ways to get around or good accomodation near the surf would be appreciated.

6ft is rare any time of year.
Swells have to wrap to hit the surf reefs and reduce in size.
Flat spells of several weeks and side shore winds are common. Wind can be chilly so springie helps.

Been here 3 weeks and it's been pumping. Great waves, local are friendly. Only downside is that it's pretty expensive. It's also a lot colder than I expected so make sure you bring a wettie (shorty) and a sweatshirt or light jacket for the evenings.

We are the localz....and we don't need outsiders, dick....If you pay up ahead, we'll let you catch a few Amanagave sliders; we don't allow surf camps and seek to keep our isle for US.

Its inconsistent in July. Have been there twice, and flat days outnumbered rideable surf days. Definitely don't expect any size, a good swell over there is headhigh...by the way that guy who wrote it was pumping in July 2005 is tripping because i was there that month and it was flat more often than not.
basically you will get way more waves in indo at that time of the year even with the crowds...
