Surfing near LA in May

Hey guys,

I'm from Finland and about to go to LA around 15th May till the end of the month. I'm wondering if someone knows how's the surf there during that time. I was thinking about staying near Hermosa beach. Is there any waves in May and how crowded it is? Or is it better to go to Huntington or Venice? I'm not looking for too big waves, 3-5ft would be enough. I've surfed about 20-30 times in Australia and looking for easy spots. All help is appreciated!

Hey Man,
Water temp should not be too much of a problem but you will likely find a 3/2 mm suit useful May - June is filled with combo swell (both from the north and the south, as the seasons change)  That means there is plenty of surf (LA area is better on south swells which are firing up as the southern hemisphere turns into fall and winter)....You can get some better exposure to both if you head south to San Diego and even better if you head down to baja mexico (i recently wrote an note on it on my travel blog http://www.live-swell.com/blog/2014/05/01/one-day-baja-surf-vacation/ )  Crowds will be in effect at popular spots north of the border, but south in Mexico will be pretty open....
