Surfing near NYC

« on: April 07 2004 13:04:00 »

I'm a beginner surfer looking to surf on the weekends somewhere near NYC, maybe Long Island or New Jersey. Two questions: 1) can anyone recommend a beach, and 2) I'm looking for someone to go out there with, because the best way I can figure out to get out is to rent a car, and it would be more economical to share with someone. Are there any fellow city dwellers out there who are dying to get out? I live in Manhattan (UWS) by the way.

I hear there is going to be a ferry that runs from NYC to Sandy Hook aka "the hook".  right now the ferry runs to Highlands I'm sure you could catch a ride south from there or take a cab,

plenty, Long beach is good in the summer for beginners, go out to long island and you can go to gilgo if you find a place to park where you dont need to be a resident, robert moses state park, smiths point and if your willing ditch plains in montauk, watch where you park at ditch, you can get a hefty ticket.  all these spots are best for beginners in the summer.
