I am keen to come work in the states on a 1 year visa. I want to live and work in a surf town in cali but cant really figure out where would be best. I want good surf (that i can walk too if possible, good nightlife and chilled out people) can the yanks out there give me some advice...

if you want warmer weather, socal would be your best bet. huntington beach is "surf city"...the coast is littered with surf spots and everything is right near the pier. get a job at the coffee shop or something, best of luck. santa cruz is another option and the people are pretty chill there if you are chill...

If I were in your shoes, I'd definitely head for Encinitas. You've got some of the finest surf in California there, Swami's, Pipes, Cardiff Reef, Beacons. It's a pretty decent party town as well, and if you'll have a car, you can travel to Solana Beach, just down the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) to The Belly Up Tavern. I've seen plenty of great bands there including John Mayall, Taj Mahal and others. No offense to HB, but Orange and LA counties are the armpits of California IMHO. San Diego rules!
