Aussie on Surfing Sarfari

Hello All
ive just recently landed in LA (shit you guys, thats one scarey place), ive purchased a VW camper and am in the process of replacing the engine. Im wanting to do a 3 month surf trip through the US and hopefully a never ending surfing trip down into South America. Having surfed extensively thru Australia and some areas of the south pacific i am comfortable in most waves, being older now im more happy up to head high. I brought a short board with me but will be looking to add a longboard in time. At the moment im in San Francisco repairing this car but would appreciate some advice from the locals on planning a itenerary, where i lived in Australia i can surf all year round without a wetsuit and the grils go topless everywhere, any help in filling this void will be appreciated.
