Dawn Patrol, brah.  It's the only way to beat the crowds.  You get there early and you will have ANY surf spot to yourself.

Go to Pacific Beach or Mission Beach.. the beach breaks are your best bet.. you probably won't get any waves at a reef break--the dude running his mouth about dawn patrol is a clown.. if the waves are any good.. there will be plenty of competition.. go to the beach

Negative waves, man.  What's with the negative waves?

Maybe if you got to the beach early, like crack of dawn, instead of rolling in around 9 am sucking on your favorite beverage, you might find the waves less crowded.  It works for me all the time.
