Can anyone recommend knee pads for use over a wetsuit ?

« on: March 16 2009 10:03:00 »

Hi all,

I'm a Norcal surfing, usually on a 7"10 board. For some reason I tend to bang my right knee on the top of my board a lot as I paddle (and thrust) onto waves.

My suit's (cheap Hurley suit) knee pads don't really help, it's just a rubber sticker over the knee. Sometimes after a weekend of surfing, my knee will actually be bruised and swollen.

Anyone else have this problem?

I'm thinking of buying a soft knee pad to wear OVER my suit, can anyone recommend something? Alternatively, a new suit with really good built-in pads?

Thanks!

The same thing is happening to me.  I switched from a longboard to a 6'8" fish  (I'm 5'11"), and also ditched my wetsuit, and my knees are bruising from banging the top of the board throughout my whole session.

My 3.2mm Body Glove wetsuit has thicker rubber covering the knees, and I never had this problem while using this suit.  I even surfed with the fish & wetsuit, and didn't have any bruises.

Norcal?  Isn't your suit already fairly thick?   In any case, I'd recommend getting a suit with better knee protection.  Actual knee pads might hinder your movement.

Hey mate, never heard of anyone surfing in knee pads, one of my mates who has just started is hiting his knee heaps too, suggested he tried popping up about 20 to 30 times a day on the floor and he doesn't hit his knee any where as much as he used to.

I am looking for the same thing.  Both of my wetsuits look like they're about to rip at the knee - I'm almost tempted to get some skating pads to prevent this from happening.

I almost grip the boar with my knees for some reason.

Home Depot sells a silicone set that could be worn in the water. They are about $25.Look for another wetsuit and check out the knees before you buy.

come on you guys giving BJ's out in the water?  why dont you just duck tape diapers on your knees...from nor cal, you are an embarrasament to the crew... hard hard core surf out that way...any how it seems you use your knees to stabilize the board while you paddle, thats normal quit being a puss and surf.

I had the same problem! out of the darkness a simple solution arose.. Here's mine and it seems do to the trick! Get Neoprene wetsuit offcuts (They should be 3-4mm thick) cut them into largish oval shapes. I use contact adhesive glue to attatch them to the knee area on the inside(or outside) of the wetsuit.(Less chance of them peeling off as opposed to putting them on the outside) You can glue another oval on to the first for more cusioning and remember the wetsuit must be dry before gluing and if you adhere to proper glue appplication guidelines(allowing glue to air dry +-20min before bonding) it stays put, surf after surf! It sounds long winded but it aint really. You retain most of your knees mobility(neoprene naturally stretches) and way less bruising! let me know of your final success story!
