Yeah, so I 'm going to Vietnam in 2 weeks and I want to know where to go and if to go. Is surfing in Vietnam for real or is it like Grandma's lilly pad pond in the back yard? I'm not going if their isn't any surf so someone tell it to me straight. Word. I'm out.

I surfed in Da Nang during the war in 70-72 at a place called Red Beach - now its called Namo beach. It was a fun beachbreak. The summer months July , aug , sept were typically flat but we were inside of the Da Nang bay so we couldn't get every swell. China beach, a bit south is more open and breaks out farther than Red beach.
I would definitely go if I were you, the water is warm all year round, the beaches are beautiful and there are waves, particularly during monsoon season. If you get to Da Nang check out the rivermouth at the Namo river.
I would go again in a second

There is great surf in Nha Trang between October and April. There are beaches for beginners and for experienced surfers. There is one place that rents long boards, short boards and SUP's. It's called the Shack Vietnam and you can find them online or inquire at the Guava bar in Nha Trang. Good luck.

The surf in Vietnam is very consistent in the winter. I've gotten waves every time i've been there. Going to Danang in Jan 2014. Its the last frontier. Indo is so pack these days. Watch the surf forecast on Surfline.com or surfforecast.com. Whatever Hainan Island gets, Danang to Nha trang and sometimes Vung Tau will get. Don't think you can paddle out and own it. You will only get own.
