Gold Coast is probably your best bet. Good waves and the lifestyle is pretty laid back. It is however really quite "touristy" and Surfers (the main area of nightlife on the Gold Coast) is really scummy and gets boring after about 2 days.

as far as people go the sunny coast locals are real friendly,
& the gold coast crew are a bit fake. Both coasts have their
fair share of classic waves on their day, the goldie gets super crowded though. My pick would be the sunny coast, just a better vibe to it !

gold coast was the place to be in the 70'S / 80's
but now the place lacks a soul & has overdosed on
buildings & tourists. While all the 70's/80's locals were
smoking dope the greedy white shoe wearing developers
snuk in & totally ruined the place, made massive $$$$$ then
went back to melbourne leaving an overcrowded jungle.
The sunshine coast on the other hand has a more surfer
community feel. But for how long I wonder? Those white shoe
Melbourne piggies are about to pounce again.

I'm a grommet stuck in the middle (brisbane) & get jealous
of the locals on both coasts. Lucky bastards get to surf before & after school & i can only go on weekends.
