I did a semester at University of Newcastle in 96. Great Aussie town and great surf. It was about a 15 minute drive to the surf and there are great options. Beach breaks and reef. The surf around Sydney is crowded as all hell. Newcastle is about a 2 hour train ride from Sydney, so its and easy weekend trip.
