Upto knee high beachbreaks during heavy winds at beaches outside of the City. Better to get a boat and surf the outer reefs. Just came back from there (didn't have my board though) and plenty of unridden outer reefs. Saw a sick righthander peeling for a few hundred metres at Second Mile Opening, which is an opening in the reef north of Cooktown.

i have herd about charters going to the outer reefs from there. I have heard that it is very fickle and that it takes alot of things to come together to get some good surf.
The tides make it very hard as it may only be surfable for about half an hour then it gets too shallow or too fat. you also gotta realise that there is no protection from the wind what so ever out there, so that plays a huge role in the surf you will get.
I have also heard many stories of big tiger sharks roaming round out there, so you gotta remember that.
I'd also say that any missions out to the surfable reefs are going to be very expensive (boat, fuel, a guide to show you the breaks etc.) and because of that i dont think you would be up every saturday and sunday getting the early...

My mate's brother in law has lived his whole life in Cairns and surfs pretty well. Proof. Apparently, there are good reef waves if you know where to go. In cyclone season, he says there can be some fairly tidy waves on the mainland, also if you know where to go.

Very occasionally. Like during cyclones! There is a few outer reefies with potential, but you'll need a boat, some local knowledge, the right tides and winds, and a bit of luck. Then you'll need to keep a watch for the noahs (which come in the xxxl size up here), and for six months of the year you can't swim up there anyway because of these tiny little deadly jellyfish, which have killed a few tourists in recent years. The nearest rideable surf is at a town called 1770 which is a couple of days drive south, at the very beginning of the Barrier Reef.

lived there twelve years ,north of cairns at ellis beach is ratshit bay, near turtle cove, can get rideable b waves from straight east swell in reef gap, but usually slop, ive surfed the outer reefs , plenty of magic reefs if you got the money or a boat, used to be a regular group of cairns surfers who hired a boat together,, long reef just at back of green island at cairns but beware its live coral
