Surfing near Kingston, ON

« on: February 13 2006 22:02:00 »

I'm an aussie surfer, been living in Kingston for 20 months now and haven't even considered surfing here - didn't know it was possible, until now! Not a huge fan of cold water either!!(Glad I found this site!) Going land-crazy and need a wave. Looking for more info re surfing nearer Kingston if possible as I don't fancy driving 4+ hours to "maybe" find waves. Also looking for surf buddies - anyone willing to meet me in the middle? And where might I buy gear, (board & wettie), or should I just try e-bay? Are there surf shops in TO or other areas? Are there any clubs?
Thanks

Hey Jafa
spent some time in K-Town and saw a few good strorms roll through there....the set up should be good around there with limestone shelves in the water and always a ton of wind, but i never really saw too much ridable surf.  try the picton sand banks on a storm blowing out of the west.   sand bars there are really well formed and could produce some fun waves, but it could be crap as well....

Thanks mate. I was just checking out the map for Picton on the weekend & thought the same. Wasn't sure about the depth/quality of banks tho'. maybe some of the islands too?
Anyway, cheers for the tip. Othe than Picton, what might be the nearest wave near Kingston?

hey
i have been searchin for kingston surf to found some spots to first one is at Patterson Point with good S-SW. 10 minutes from Queen's campus.  Make sure you bring booties though. another is near the rmc (royal military collage) a sw wind just off the peninsula at rmc.  I would not recommend this break to anyone, its fickle and infrequent. patterson park is west of St Lawrence College, down Sunnyacres road check out google maps never been to any of these places lookin forward to see them ive never surfed before but really want to im hookin myself up with a cheap board and im going to check these places out to learn hopefully.

Simon,

Get used to the cold water, infrequent waves and constant wave hunting. It's all part of the fun around here.

I have heard nothing but goods things about Sandbanks. You are lucky to be living near there, I hear it's one of the better spots for surfing Lake Ontario.

Simon me, Bill, and Vlad are probably going to be heading down that way this weekend.  Probably stop by and pick up Adam too if he's up for it.  Looks like Oshawa should be working if not we'll travel further down towards your neck of the woods.

Drop me a line if you're really going and able to pick me up along the way. I'm guessing you were thinking about Sunday judging by the forecast. Good luck in huron this weekend if you guys go.
