Is there a large shark population in Costa Rica? How many shark attacks have there been in the last 5 years?

I live just north of Playas del Coco in Guancaste, Costa Rica. I have been a scuba instructor here and now my wife and I operate a surf live aboard. There are many white tip reef sharks here and north of here, Bull sharks. On an agression scale of 1 to 10 white tips are a 1. Bulls on the other hand are an 8. In all my time here I have spent time with both underwater. Niether have I experienced any agression nor have I heard of an attack. I take surfers north to Witches & Ollie's all the time and have not had an incident.

Hey terry, good that you ask, costa rica is very dangerous in relation with sharks. I have had many assaults and heard of plenty inccidents where a leg or arm was taken, nothing serious though, at least no fatal inccidents. cheers ;)

I only heard of one, but that was a girl who went swimming in the protected area in a nationalpark. but we were in there too and lot of other spots. The locals went in almost everyday but they all said there were no sharks and never had something to do with them

There are sharks everywhere there is ocean. I have been surfing 5 years in Costa Rica and have not heard of any attacks. I have only seen one shark over three feet in 5 years and that was from a boat outside the reef.
