Is it ok to travel by buses with a surfboard in CR?

« on: November 25 2005 23:11:00 »

If it's allowed, is it much of a hassle?  I'm planning to surf the Central Pacific area for a few days and also the Northern Pacific area.  I'd like to save the $$ on the rental car if the buses are ok.  The board I'll have will be 6'6".

Surely I'm not the only budget minded (broke) traveling surfer.  If anyone has ever used the bus while carrying a surfboard in Costa Rica, I'd really appreciate any advice.  If it is worth the expense for the rental car, please let me know.

it definetly can be done but with a little effort. you always have to pay extra but its only a couple of bucks. and always have to watch out for dings and shit like that. renting a vehicle would be ideal but if it is not in the budget just bus with it. i have.

What up,

Travelling in CR on the bus lines is very sketchy.  I have been to CR three times and rode the bus once.  I took me a whole day to get from LIberia to Tamarindo, a genuinely brutal experience.  Travelling on the bus with a board is no big deal either.  Youve got a shortboard, that will be fine.  Just be prepared for a lot of waiting and hassle.  If your patient then the bus is for you, its ridiculously cheap.  Im a dude with not a lot of money but i will not go back there without a rental again.  Plus you can sleep in it if worse comes to worse (board inside and all).

Hope that helps,

peace

Thanks guys for the info.  I guess I'll quit trying to be so cheap and spend a few extra bucks on a rental.  I'd rather not set myself up for needless hassles.  My sketchy spanish will probally do enough of that anyway.....Muchosgrouchyash.

Well, I'd like to think it will be fine.  I plan to spend 3 months travelling through Mexico, El Salvador and Costa Rica by bus, with a 6'6, a backpack, and a lot more patience than money.

Any tips?

Just watch your board that they dont load huge stuff ontop of it with hard wheels sticking out. If you do have to pay extra, it is not a lot, have faith, and dont worry about it. Any little dings you might get (just have a decent bag) is worth the added experience of taking a local bus...the views, the people...a rental is waaaay more $$ and the few times you are away from the surf you aren't gonna see much countryside driving yourself around.
