If you are on the west side your best most consistant spot, without the tourists and local crap is mal pais. On the east head to salsa, no doubt one of the hardest rocking barrels around, be careful, respect the locals and stay at rocking jays. muy bueno!!

I am trying to go to Outward bound in Costa Rica. I am trying to go in January until April but there are not many courses offered that time of year so I am attempting to put together a custom semester using three of the courses they usually
offer.  Spanish emphasis, Surf-Adventure and Multi element. I don't want money or  a free trip, I just need at least five more people to make it happen. This will be an adventure and you can receive school credits. If you know anyone interested please have them Email me(StavelyL @AOL.com)  or go to CRROBS.org.

you've mentioned Jaco and Playa Hermosa but you forgot to mention Roca Loca right in between both beaches,if you are a more expirenced surfer try this spot at around lowtide when the beachbreak is closing out and kicking yer ass to the sand.Roca Loca has an awesome long right break, big and fat at times its super fun but watchout for rocks and try not to go left too much, trust me you don't wanna get stuck in the pit paddling back out at Rocaloca.Like i said for more experienced surfers.
Get stoked at Roca Loca!!! Cheers

Bar and Cabinas Las Olas in Playa Samara has palm huts on the sand for $20. Great bar with lots of people everynight. Small surf in front of bar. Reef surfing in the bay and good beach breaks nearby, Camaronal, Guiones, Barrigona, Buena Vista. If you're going from Tamarindo to Mal Pais this is a good place to stop. Camaronal is still uncrowded.

Frank's Place is the best place to start or end your visit  in Mal Pais.
Central to all, good accomidations, great food and have a Trit for dessert.
