Solo surfing trip - Tamarindo or Mal Pais?

Hi folks,

I'm thinking about heading down to CR for two weeks around end-July / early-August.  I'm 25 and have never surfed before.  Basically I'm looking to learn how to surf, chill out a lot on the beach or in a hammock in a beautiful surrounding, and perhaps meet some peeps (preferably some pretty girls!).  My search has led me to either the Witch's Rock camp in Tamarindo or the Azul Surf Camp in Mal Pais.  Wondering if anyone could provide me with some further info/suggestions.  Oh yeah, and I'm also curious about the timing since it will be during the green season.

Thanks,

Dan

If you've never surfed before and you want to meet "peeps"  I would recommend Tamarindo.  Mal Pais is a remote place (it's an adventure getting there) with not much to do other than surf,  It's a beautifull beach though.  Summer/green season has bigger surf but also has onshore winds later in the day. Drop me an email if you want more info on either place.

i'm having the same dilemma... solo trip to CR in mid August and I'm pretty beginnerish; I wanna go someplace with good surf for learning but Tamarindo sounds a bit too North Americanized for my tastes.  I'm planning on Mal Pais and then possibly down to Dominical... does this sound like a good idea for beginnerish waves??

Both places have incredible waves, beginners cant eaven get out there pass the white water so be carefull. for beginners jaco south part, playa ventana south of dominical and the tamarindo region. tamarindo has a skatin bowl so bring your skate when tere are no waves...

See you in costa rica

No brainer. Go Tamarindo. Much more gentle surf. Long boarding off of a forgiving point right in town . Lots of surf buisnesses-girls and dancing.. Houses and hotels to rent.
Mal pais- much more rugged terrain and surf. Basically one decent place to eat on the one road town. Remote place to get in--and out.
I prefer Mal Pais- less drunks, more nature better memories. You could like run into your neighbor in Tamarindo. O yeah remember to fly into La Libertad- close to both places. Old US Contra staging  and evac - less tourist more jungle
Enjoy

Hi all, female, looking to head down 2/6/09-2/20/09, landing in Liberia.  New to the entire region.  Want to take a week of surf lessons then browse around (backpacking) for a week.  Any recommendations on cheap stay/lessons/eats...fun would be greatly appreciated.  Love, T
