Going to Costa Rica in May« on: March 09 2009 13:03:00 »
I'm planning a surf trip to Costa Rica at the end of May. I'm looking to get into a surf school for a week. I'll be flying out of Toronto, Canada. If anyone knows a great surf school in a good spot please let me know. And if anyone wants to join in I would say the more the merrier.

Witches Rock surf camp in Tamarindo is fantastic from what I've heard. We spend a lot of time in Tamarindo (we're also from Toronto) and eat at Witches Rock restaurant a lot. Spoke to a group of young guys from Jersey last month who all said it was the best vacation they ever had.

I was just there during the month of Jan. From Vancouver, and def head to Tamarindo. Really good surf for every level. I went to Iguana Surf for my lessons, my instructor was Kenner. He was cool, only 3 ppl max to a group where as i've seen as many as 6 or 7 ppl to a group with other schools.
I have also heard really good things about Witches Rock as well. Can't speak from experience but i didn't meet one person who had anything bad to say about them.
I'm actually gonna be back there May 23-30th for my brothers stag. And flying to Liberia via Toronto. Let me know n we'll hook up for a drink somewhere bro!

Costa Rica is a great place to learn how to surf. The water is warm and there are waves for every level of surfer.
Kenner is a good instructor. I've seen him work and I'd definitely recommend him. I believe he works for Iguana Surf, but he might moonlight at some other schools as well.
Witch's Rock is good place to go for young party seekers. The surfing lessons are usually good.
If you want more personal lessons and you prefer a quite vacation to the hustle and bustle of Tamarindo then I'd suggest heading to Playa Grande. It is one of the most consistent surf breaks in Costa Rica and it has a wide open beach for learning while avoiding the crowds.
The best surf school in Playa Grande is Una Ola Surf Camp.

Thanks for the heads up guys. I'll take a look at the one you mentioned Hugh.
Dez, if i'm down there for that time count me in for that drink. It's looking like she'll be a solo mission down there so i'm up for all good times.

Unreal that owners of Una Ola and WRSC are here promoting themselves. Just post and say you are who you are guys.

Ah, a fellow canuck eh?
Stay up in the Tamarindo / Playa Grande area. Waves are chill and there are lots of other activities.
Where you stay depends on your budget. You can go full surf camp like WRSC or Una Ola, or you can stay in a hotel / hostel and go with daily lessons from people like Kenner.
Check out www.patrick.tc for some of the breaks, town info and so forth.

Witches Rock is good, but it more difficult to get to than other surf areas. I would tell anyone going to Costa Rica to go straight to Mal Pais. Very laid back town with great surf. Spent a week there in October and had a blast. A little lower key than Tamarindo, but less crowded too. Mal Pais Surf Camp is where I stayed and recommend. No matter where you go you'll have fun!
