Which is the best surf travel company?

« on: January 05 2012 19:01:00 »

I've travelled to a lot of places surfing on my own, booking my own travel, renting cars, etc and I've never used a guide or done a real boat trip. This year I want to do a real "surf trip" where all I do is surf, look for more surf, surf, sleep, look for more surf, surf... you get the idea. So, I've been researching surf travel companies... surferliving.com, waterways.com, wavehunters, theperfectwave, yadda yadda yadda. At first I was amped but now my head hurts looking at all the options. Does anyone have some first hand experience and/ or a recommendation on which company I should book with (or not book with!)? I'll pretty much go anywhere that has waves Feb/ Mar 2012

Thanks for the help.

Best in Feb/Mar is Caroline or Solomon Islands or Papua New Guinea....Caroline Islands has one of the best rights in the world at P-Pass, and guaranteed uncrowded waves at Kosrae the island next door (max 8 surfers). Waves are big and heavy here though so you need to be a decent surfer. Solomons is an adventure - you can be taken to places that have never seen white people. PNG is really popular, bit easier to get to, and limits number of surfers to 20.....but books out early so you need to be flexible with your dates......or early season Ments is always good. Don't stress about who to book through - booking through an agent is to save you stress!  Just enquire with them all and go with the one who gives the best service or price - whichever means more to you!!

I would definitely recommend Surfer Living.com I booked a surf trip with them in October to Puerto Rico and they were pretty super awesome I have to say. They did a bunch of research for me that I was way too lazy to do myself haha, like what time the closest surf shop opened and where to find the best mofongo (local dish that I heard was good... and it was!). I also booked a trip last year with one of the others you mentioned and they were OK. Not good or bad enough to name or complain but, speaking of PR, the caribbean is also a good option in Feb/ Mar! Hope that helps.

Hi Tyler!  That's fantastic that you're going on a trip this year. Feb-Mar can be a great time to travel to some great regions with a good chance of some pumping surf!  The Bocas del Toro region of Panama can go off in Feb and March. Their swell window is from Dec. to March.  Other parts of Central America and N. Peru can get some early South Swells as well.  Fiji gets some good swell in Feb, and conditions will be slightly better in March.  If you're ready to spend a little more time and money, a trip to the South Pacific may be your best bet. Samoa, Tahiti, and Tonga all pick up North Swells during that time period and can get you A+ conditions.  As far as surf travel providers, we like to think we're the best, but then again we're a little biased ;)  -WW

I travelled to Indo to the mentawies with waterways last year and they really took care of me and my crew everything was organized. It was so cool to show up at the airport and have a guy waiting for us. We got right into the van and headed out to our first stop.
They were also cool on the phone and know everything about surf travel. i talked to mike at waterways alot and he is an expert and super cool. Waterways has my vote.

Samoa gets solid surf during the Feb/Mar season!  I used Waterways Travel Company to book my trip and they set me and my girlfriend up at the Salani Surf Resort on the south side of Upolu.  There was a number of fun waves around the island and only minutes from the resort, both lefts and rights.  The surf on the island can get pretty heavy but you will definitely come back ripping! Basically all you do here is surf, eat and sleep!

I think it's best to choose a company that has been in business for a bunch of years, and that know what they are selling. Only a few surf travel companies actually visit the places that they sell first hand.
I'd say stick with Waterways or wavehunters, they have both been in business for longer than a decade.

Some mates and I booked a surf trip with Surfer Living.com to Maldives and I'd definitely recommend them. I'd also recommend going to Maldives. We booked an all-inclusive boat trip and scored so many good waves in the North Male atolls. Food and crew was solid and it was cheaper than any boat trips we'd looked at in Indo. We even surfed Pasta Point, which we'd heard was off limits unless you stay at the resort there. We got it good with no hassle. There are tons of options to choose from on the Surfer Living website and probably some are better than others but the boat was sick.

Hey Keanu, do you remember the name of the boat? We're looking for something in Maldives for June.
