Transportation in El Salvador? do you need a car?« on: August 31 2006 17:08:00 »
Headed there for New Years / Jan 07. Looking for places to stay and need to know what it is like to get around. We'll most likely have boards with us. 2 people, maybe 4 boards.
Do we need to rent a car? or is there surf friendly transportation?
I am thinking we'd need to get from the airport to the beach... stay at one beach for a few days, stay at another for a few more, and continue that pattern... until we need to get back to the airport.
any tips on surf friendly places to stay would be appreciated as well.

I recommend hiring a guide with a car. This way you can use it only when you want it (half day or full day) and it is not as expensive as most people think. A guide is very usefull nowadays when knowing the area is important for security reasons.
There are some camps with very affordable prices. I am a local and have been surfing here for 30 years. I would happily answer any questions.

I have a hotel lined up. They want $40.00 each way to sunzal. Is that to much? Could I get a cab or for cheaper? I am bringing boards.

I dont know Robbie, I had problems with surflalibertad. Their bank account is under some guys name and not a company like it should be. I will skip this one this time.

so I tried to write this long post about rental cars, and good places to stay, but it was too long and this site didn't let me post it. Basically, I thought renting a car was a good safe choice (I just came back from a month over in El Salvador). The freedom was great and the safety issue is blown out of proportion.
Places to stay. Go to Papaya's lodge (cheap and basic) or Roca Sunzal (nice with A/C) in Playa Sunzal/El Tunco. Or see Subaru at Horizonte surf camp in El Zonte. While at Horizonte, ask for Walter the surf guide and he has a 4x4 that he will take you around in. I've got so much more to say about this awesome place but no room. If anyone is interested, get back to me and we can exchange emails or something...
