I just got back from a 10 day trip in El Salvador. There is a lot of crime in La Libertad. 29 people were killed there over the Easter weekend. It is no place for a female travelers. The only tourists in the country are hardcore male surfers. The break at La Libertad is polluted, crime infested and crowded with locals. Do leave anything on the beach. The area is really run down. I would suggest that you travel north to Sunzal and stay there. It is cleaner, safer and the surrroundings are better. The beach up there has sand. It is all rock in La Libertad. There is a great point break there too.

My girlfriend and I own a home in Atami - private beach club; very safe - next to Sunzal. Do you need a place to stay? We live in So Cal but travel to El Salvador very frequently. Let us know the dates you will be there... Whether we are in town or not, we have lots of resources available: a personal driver available to go to the airport, a family doctor in case of need, a cook -preparing healthy meals so you won't get sick, etc. etc. FYI: the 1st week of August is a national holiday, which means that the beaches are CROWDED. However, the last week of July will be good, since most people will not go to the beach until the following week.
Let us know! :-)

I am coming down to El Salvador in August with 4 other guys. Your house sounds nice. Can you give me some more details (beds, $, etc.)? Feel free to e-mail me privately if you like.

Mar, I saw your name while trying to get infor on surfing. I'll be flying down there on 7/7/05 and would like to surf and have a safe place to stay. If you could give me more info on your place that would be great. I'll be traveling down there about once or twice a month. Thanks for the help. Joe

Hey, I just read your mail, I am a local Salvadoran who can give you a few tips. I will be away during most of july but will be back the last week and if you would like some info, let me know, I can sure use a surf buddy, hate to do it alone while i am learning. Any how, the country is safe, good people, lots of good food, but of course, there are always people who like to start trouble, and take you for a ride. I promise to give you the inside scoop and can only hope that you return with your friends and that El Salvador becomes your future yearly destination.

I can hook you up with a surfer friend of mine in El Salvador. He cares for a very nice cottage of mine in Atami. Atami is a private, secure community (24/7 security guards) located right on the beach at El Palmar (aka Palmarcito). It is a quiet area with lots of trees and wildlife, and 10 minute drive to surf sites like Zonte, Sunzal, San Blas, Punta Roca, Conchalio. The house has AC, is fully furnished with kitchen, all utensils and BBQ. Has TV, CD Stereo, DVD, VCR, microwave, coffe maker, stove, fridge, etc. It sleeps six, is fully furnished, has a very large enclosed yard with horshoe pit etc. Asking $500 rent per week. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for pictures and more info. Have fun in El Salvador -- Surfing is world class!
