RE: Wetsuit in Cornwall for May?« Reply #1 on: April 02 2004 10:04:00 »
a warm one, unless you like cold. the weather should be warmish but the sea will be cold. dont bother with boots and gloves for a bit more freedom.

i wore a shorty in cornwall in middle of may, its cold to start with but you get used to it, i cant stand full suits though, they're too restrictive. but can still get quite cold...

WHAT!!! You don't need boots or gloves the whole winter. Just get a decent wettie + thermal rash vest or 2. Twat cap maybe, never gloves, they suck.

I agree, the sea isnt that cold during may, and the water temp is increasing. A 3/2 should be fine as long as you don't sit in one place and paddle around to get the oxygen flow to the muscles.

don't even think about having less than a thick warm thermal there. gloves, boots and make sure the wetsuit fits not too tight not too loose. may is ok september is better

I cannot believe so many people are disagreeing! OK, beginning of May will still prob be cold so you will need a thick wetsuit plus probably boots - wouldn't worry about gloves. Later on, towards the end of May, depending on the weather you can think about ditching the boots & switching suits to a 3/2. It will be different every year as the weather is so changable, it's also all down to your personal tolerance level. Some people are more than happy in a 3/2 all of May with no boots/glove - yet I've also seen people in the middle of June in a winter steamer with all the works. Just whatever works best for you...!
