Can you surf on the Isles of Scilly?

« on: January 13 2006 07:01:00 »

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to surf on the Isles of Scilly? Since the islands are west of the Cornish coast I would have thought there are some good surfing beaches, but I haven't been able to find any information. There's lots about windsurfing and sailing, and calm swimming beaches, but no mention of surfing at all. Someone enlighten me please...

I have checked a few other sites and have spoken to a couple of people, sorry to say I think you could be out of luck.. You can take a ferry to Cornwall that I believe runs dailly..

Hope that helps.

Emma,
I lived on Tresco (isles of Scilly) for 6 months in 1999, and found many good surf breaks. The best one I called Golden Balls, off Tresco (search Tresco at Global Surfers for more info). There are small beachbreaks on the inside on the islands, but the best breaks are reefs off Tresco, St Marys, St Martins, in fact I surfed good waves off all the islands. Just go for a wander and you'll find waves, though they are shallow rock bottomed breaks. Summer is small (4ft) but in winter I surfed 15ft waves and saw much larger.

I lived on the isles of scilly for four years(Tresco, St mary's)  Yes there is a few good spots around St marys, but it is better for body boarding.  You quite often have to wait till hurricane season in america and that usually pushes some good swells.  Try going up the island on the left near telegraph and down the track to the left it brings you out near an island, there is a good right hander there 6-10 ft on an exceptional day, but a bit rocky, tresco, try the golden ball out the back of tresco.  Apparently its best to to get a tow out and pick up cos the break is a long way out, but I have seen it working in feb apr barreling six foot clean. Good luck and watch the rocks
