Looking for waves in London neighbourhood!!« on: June 15 2006 05:06:00 »
I'm an Irish guy living in London the last 2 years & suffering some serious withdrawal symptoms. I surfing and windsurfing back home 2 years ago & I just got back from a 10-day trip to Portugal with some Aussie mates & I've got the bug again. Since I moved to London I have made no effort to check UK locations. This summer I plan to change that, can some on give me advice on where to go. Cornwall/Newquay is the obvious choice but I have no clue how to get there. Is there a train you can get or something, I've also been told Bournemouth can be Ok on a good day if you don't want to travel quite so far.

You should check out Joss Bay on the east coast near Kent. It can be quite good at times and is much closer to London, but be sure and check the forecast as it is not exactly consistent. There is a good local surfing community there and a local surf club but it can also get a bit crowded on a good day.

If you need a lift to waves anywhere in the UK check out the London Surf Club, a non-profit club formed of 100+ members with the idea of sharing lifts, cost and the craic. Been a member for 6 years and trips happen on any coast of the UK if there's waves beit Newcastle, Scarborough, Wales, the SW, Norfolk or Kent. A lot of folks in the club also get groups together for trips overseas. Recent ones have been to SW France, Spain, Portugal, the Canaries, California and Central and South America. The public website is out of date and being remade so you can find us in Potion Bar, 28, Maple St, London, W1T 6HP on the last Wednesday night from 8pm. Just look for the big mixed group and you'll find us.

Just show up at the Potion Bar at the address above on the last at 8pm on the Wednesday night of the month and look out for a largish group of people sitting around chatting. Just come and introduce your self, like I did after I put up this post and you will meet everybody. If you want to email me, just click on my name above.
