I asked the same question. no one answered. Talking to some surfer mate's which seems to be a ever growing circle for an absolute beginner they have recommended Woolacombe which is North Devon or about 4 hours drive from London it has lots of surf....Newquay is 6 hours away and has a tendancy to be full of chav's at weekend, busy surf and traffic jams.

Hi! The area around Barnstaple it´s very nice...though the water beeing very cold. There are surf classes over there. Good Luck!

Ive seen lessons taking place at Shoreham's Hotpipe on a Thurs eve. Maybe pop down and have a work. Dont have any more info im afraid.
Just get a board and have a go. As long as you can swim you will be ok.

If you call Small Planet which is a surf shop close to the Shoreham pipe, they will do lessons for you. I think they are £25 for a one to one for two hours. Their number is 01273 727237 good luck

WAS j ust reading thru some info and diverted to this link, so thought id reply. not that this is what i am looking for but if you are looking for lessons, then the witterings in south does lessons, and the surf is ok and good when it works. witteringsurfshop.co.uk nick does lessons from there. im sure sorted surf shop are closer to you in bournmouth do too.

Hellow its the surf gang enjoy the ride the website is up and running now I been so busy it looks like the swell back for 2008, theres plenty of lows coming are way at last just whats needed saves traveling half way around the world.
