Hi - i have traveled lots in indo and the best place to learn for sure is Batu karas. It is near Pangandaran (1 hour away) on Java. From jakarta its about an 8 hour bus ride. It is the most mellow easy right hand point you could think of. There is a bit of a reef there as well so you can move up if you like. Locals are very cool to- very laid back. Padang is more of a city but last time i paddeled out at Purus i counted 3 dead cats and 2 dead chickens i nthe water- and i am not kidding. Its pretty filthy. But then again if you are in singapore you can fly straight to padang but still if you have a week or more i would go to Batu karas.

I would say go to West Java to the fishing village Pelabuhan Ratu. There are a lot of different waves for different types of surfers. You should start at the Sunset Beach. This spot is ideal for beginners and works nearly ervertime. Surf boards can be rented and there lots of accomodations around. The best part is that the place is not that crowded u will get ur fair share of waves. On the other hand the place is dull. U have to dedicate urself to surfing. There are not much other things to do. Bring some books with you.

My daughter just went over for a month to surf. She is a beginner but has 2 wks behind her at surf camps in costa rica. Get the book Indo Surf and Lingo by Peter Neely .... he goes over all the spots in Indo. My daughter picked bali-surf.com run by a Hawaiian Leo Walsh out of Kuta in Bali/Legian. Just heard from her this morning and sounds like she is having the time of her life. Camps are quite reasonable and you end up seeing different areas when you are with a guide and they help your surfing along. Was just a little surprised that others didn't mention Kuta as there are plenty of lessons around there for the beginners and lots to upgrade to around. Can be crowded from what I have heard, but lots to do and good times with others. Good luck and have a great time.

BTW, for beginners looking for a camp in Costa Rica, I would highly recommend Jim Hogan's Surf Camp at Hermosa Beach(near Jaco in Costa Rica). He was world long board champ in 95/96 and my daughter said that she learned more in 1 day with him than the whole week at the previous surf camp

I would like to caution ppl about bali-surf.com. Further to my post above, there was a serious issue (enuf said) with this camp that landed one of the surfers in jail for a minimum of 6 months. Just taking the recommendation back.
