surf trip to Lombok or Sumatra? June 09« on: March 07 2009 13:03:00 »
I'm going to Indo for a month at least in June and can't decide where would be better to go, Lombok or Sumatra....I spent 6 weeks in Bali last year and want to go somewhere a bit less crowded where i can improve my surfing....
I would say i'm beginner/intermediate surfer, i ride a 6"2 and have ridden on beach breaks at head high + and reefs at maybe chest height.....I'll be traveling by myself...
Any ideas guys?

why is sumatra better than lombok? Has anyone been to both and have any opinions? cheers

Been to both.
Personally i think sumatra gets more swell but the ments get crowded, feralling is becoming illegal and hard to access a lot of waves.
If mainland sumatra, south coast gets a lot of swell but all the breaks are touchy..a bit Fickle and only a few are world class on their day.
You also have to spend a lot of time travelling between waves.
Wind is sometimes an issue too.
As for lombok, the best wave is desert point, the others dont compare.

There are some great waves but a only a few are protected by the trade wind. I would choose south sumatra, surf ujung bocur, stay at family losmen, in front of the point..And search a lot south and north.
You might find some great secrets like i did..
Its not the place to go if you want waves like desert point though.
If you do go to lombok, imo south sumatra is a good warm up for better locations. But i wouldnt mind living there.

cheers for the tips groundswell
Think sumatra is gonna be my best bet, gonna be hitting the mainland not the ments....what are the reefs and tides like around there? are you gonna be paying big if you take a tumble in terms of boards and body? haha
how many/what boards would you reccommend?

Well crowd wise hard to say in 09, but you could get epic waves at Macaronis if you stayed at Macaronis Resort. Funnest left in the world come mini Chopes when it gets big, but then there are other funner mellow waves to surf like Macas Right, Silabu Left or Batcave if it gets to heavy for you. But don't under-estimate yourself, just because you have only surfed chest high reef breaks doesn't mean you won't be able to surf over-head Macas, Lances Left or Thunders this time around. Also Indies Explorer would allow you to get to Thunders, Lances and other nearby waves included in the package. Check out www.macaronisresort.com and contact me if you'd like to know more. Cheers... and best of luck, hope you score in any case.

Cheers but macaronies would be waaay out of my budget....i'm going pretty low budget (i.e. as cheap as possible) look for a total budget of less that £10(GBP) a day, so probs just some cheap losmen....Would love to score maccas at some point in my life though!
