Mentawai losmen, family homestay?!

« on: March 14 2012 20:03:00 »

I've been living & teaching in Bali the past ten years. Have spent my holidays surfing on many of the islands, but haven't made it to the Mentawai yet. Thinking of going this June/July,
Does anyone know?
Is it possible to stay with a family or a losmen on some of the islands?
or is it now western land camps only $$$$$$$$   ?!

I have only been to Pulau Sipura now, so I don't know much about the other islands, but someone told me, that near the wave Macaronis in the village Silabu there are Losmen.
On Pulau Sipura you can either stay in Tua Peijat which is a bigger village, nearly a small town with places to stay, but there you would have to charter a boat to get to the waves.
In the south of Sipura is the village Katiet. There are some places to stay right in front of the awesome wave Lance's right. Besides expensive western surf camps there are a few Losmen as well...

No need to waste money on expensive resort or boat trip

For Macaronis, you can stay in the village of silabu, but its a long walk from there to the wave, you can also camp on the inside of the point or camp out in the viewing tower.

You must get ferry to sikakap then long motor bike ride to Silabu or few hour boat ride, you can surf green bush on the way if tide high and offshore.

South Sipora= Katiet (HT,s) has a few budget places to stay now and you can walk to lances left and few other breaks.

To get there you take ferry to Siboian then 1hr or so by long boat.

Nth Sipora=Tua Pajet is losmen and losmen in Mapadaget, where you can take a long walk and long long paddle to Telescopes, but most other waves you need to hire boat and can be expensive.

Sth Siberut (playgrounds area)- there is many many budget places at Nyang Nyang out front is E-bay, and pitstops, you can also walk to Beng Beng, nipussies and bank vaults and hire ride to other waves.

You can also stay at budget place on the same island as Kandui.

To get to Siberut, you take ferry to Muara Siberut then long boat to playgrounds area about one hour away.

Yes better you stay at budget local place and help the local people.

The cost by ferry from Padang is about 50,000 to 100,000 rupiah ($5-$10) depending on ferry, some depart from Padang some from Bungus harbour.

All budget losmen in mentawai cost from 50,000 a room to around 100,000 per person per night, its much better price for you then expensive surf camp and charter boat not help local people, just want to come surf waves, but no benefit for local people.

I really don't get these people that put stuff on .com
man if you find your way through the islands (which by the way is only for a few) keep it on the low or there will only be pricks stuffing for everyone.
big tip if you want to take the adventure: speak indo, speak indo, take medicines, be ready cause it aint for little girls.

i hear some full on stories over there,
it gets extremely expensive if you don't know how to speak indo, you can only surf if you find boats and i hear often locals don't have boat available or no petrol, still its hundreds of dollars for a trip to a wave.
even if you stay near a wave that wave may not break often enough, plus different winds.. very risky if you don't have the time.
save money and in the end not even worth it

Its not really a secret these days that you can do it cheap in Mentawais, all the info is even printed in the recent edition of Indonesian lonely planet guide.(including info on ferrys)

The Mentawais are crowded these days with western owned boats and resorts, screw that the more people that know you can do it cheap the better, hopefully it will see a reduction in charter boats.

The locals are really getting clued on and getting it together, speaking english, and accommodation (Umas) very similar to Kandui resort, electricity, bathrooms, cold beer but all at Indo prices, 100% local owned and run, just like it should be.
