Jamaica, Montego Bay ... surf there or nearby?« on: April 29 2006 01:04:00 »
You avg surfer here from Ocean Beach, San Francisco. I am heading to a wedding in Montega Bay and my time there is limited. I gotta get some surf if possible.
If anyone knows of a place to get to for a half a day session from there. I would be appreciative ...

I've surfed Jamaica and the nearest spot I know is a solid 4 hours east in Buff Bay. I think the waves are seldom large enough any further to the west. Unfortunately, the only place you can rent a board is on the south-east corner of the island... write me if you need more info.

sorry mate. I think you would need a storm or act of god to get a wave in Montego Bay. Buff Bay is a solid 4 hours east and they have some boards (local kids, no shop name) in Boston Bay, about another 45 minutes east. If you end up near Kingston, Billy Wilmot has a good selection of boards.

Hey guys, I've been reading through the post and I thought I'd throw my two cents in. Believe it or not there is a spot in Mo Bay that's ridable. The center jetty right out in the middle of the bay will actually break but the key is being there on one of the three (or less probably) days of the year that it does. And if you're going in the summer, it's not gonna happen. As far as taking a half day trip from there to surf... that's not likely. Walter mentioned Buff Bay which is gonna be the closest spot with consistent surf and like he said.. 4 hours away.

In response to Mike's question.. No, there's no surf in Negril and you couldn't be any farther from surf and still be in Jamaica.. Forget surfing and stick to the rum and Red Stripe. And Angelo, if you're looking to surf in Jamaica you're going to want to check out the south / south east side of the island from kingston around to Boston Bay. I've got an article on my site at http://www.surfspotsonline.com/jamaica-surf-spots.html that details a lot of the spots I surfed when I was down there. Check it out if you're still looking for info.
