I can't defend other Wellington surfers, I have surfed the gap on and off since '73. surfings popularity has been steadily exploding since about the mid eighties, a little respect in the water goes a long way, whether you are a local or visitor. people just need education, instead of this fostered attitude of lets muscle in the crowd and out hassle every one out there. I think it all revolves around the competitive image thing. look on the bright side at least you have it on your doorstep.
hope you get good waves soon.

Mate I had a trip to NZ about 10 years ago and surfed with some Wellington locals at Lyall bay. They all seemed like a mellow crew. The next day they took me to a place I think was called Ding Dong then we headed to castle point. Its a right hander yes? well it was 6 foot pumping and there were only about 6 peeps in the water. Unless things have changed you have nothing to whinge about, come to the gold coast and surf snapper super bank at 6 foot with 1000 guys in the water, now thats agro.

GOT TO LAUGH MATE! not at you, with you , Its Ning Nong, not Ding Dong! The point break left hander is fantastic, and a superb right hand wave that can hold up to eight foot on a high tide 500 meters down the road, use to get it to myself in the 70's and eighties, different now though, even midweek. The spot is an hour and three quaters from town. Castle point is about 2 and a half hours from wellington good beach breaks,

.... to ride the waves is a priceless gift which deserves respect, as do all those who share that feeling....its a moment of true beauty and power....the bliss and harmony a surfer reaches in that moment has the potential to transcend the boundaries and limitations which so often define our lives... be the change.

Anyone got a tissue. What about when your transcenending down the face while getting dropped in on and having avoid the 6 kooks who dropped in on each other and didnt make the drop on the previous wave? Sort of cuts into the beauty a bit aye AYE!!

Well in that the beauty would be how gracefully you avoid slicing open their shins as you go on to ride out the wave like a master, to their looks of consternation, confident yet humble in your power and control over their miserable fates as kooks....keep your tissue for later frustrations.

What about the dudes who take the drop on all fours ,stand up then fall off and waste the wave. Is it wrong to drop in or what?
