Anywhere in NZ that you can surf wetsuit-free year round?

« on: March 19 2005 06:03:00 »

I can't wear wetsuits because of allergies and since I live in England where you pretty much need one year round I am planning to move somewhere where it is warm enough that I can surf in just a bikini and rashie. I know that at least some of the year it is possible to do this in New Zealand, but I know the climate varies across the country and seasonally so if anyone can tell me how many months of the year it would be possible to surf without wearing a wetsuit, or if there is anywhere that it is possible to do it year round (the Northland/Bay of Islands?) I would really appreciate it.

Kia ora
surfing nz without a wetsuit is possible but your are restricted, anywhere north of auckland during the summer months(jan, feb, march)will be comfortable. South of auckland down to New plymouth locals will surf without wetsiuts during the summer but you incounter a slight windchill. Do wear plenty of good qualitly sun lotion as the sun is very harsh!!!! All in all not the best place for the tropical surf experience, if you require any other information just email me!

I would agreee - the Gold Coast in Australia is a lot better for surf anyway & a way better life style if you are into a modern fast one.  The water is warm and there are countless spots to choose from. Coming back to cold water and weather in NZ was not pleasant.  You'd proabably earn more in Au anyway and then be able to go to the tropics more often.

Have you ever tried a dry suit? I have a friend who is a diver who gets skin reactions from cold water. She uses a  dry suit. Good luck!

Can you wear the Titanium rashie?? I wear one with boardies during summer both on east and west coasts Ragan and above and it is fine, only because of our harsh sun..... winter - no way u'd catch me in bikini and rashie!!

Go the Gold Coast or Sunny Coast..forget about NZ..I have lived both and surfed both and Aus is the go..warm, sunny, hot aussie girls, its a totally different experience compared to NZ..surfing is good anywhere but when u have to leave the water to actually live there then it kinda is a bit boring in NZ..caio
